There is a compromise between a single lamp under the ceiling and a bright chandelier - a two-gang switch. It allows you to adjust the lighting modes in the room at the request of the owners. There must be at least three cables. What is their purpose? Two of them are phase conductors, one is a neutral conductor. Only if there are two phases on the ceiling, you can connect the chandelier to two switches and form different degrees of illumination.

Attention! When buying a lighting fixture, pay attention to the number of wires at the exit of the chandelier you like: there should be three or more of them. Otherwise, this chandelier is designed to turn on and work all the lamps at the same time.

We work safely

You will have to work directly with electrical wiring, so at the time of all work it should not be energized. To completely protect yourself from electric shock, you need to not only make sure that the switch is in the “off” position, but generally turn off the machines on the shield.

Sometimes you can see a whole bunch of wires coming out of the chandelier. This means that the manufacturer of the chandelier has left you the opportunity to form groups of lamps according to your preference.

As an example of connecting a chandelier to a two-gang switch, consider the case when four cables are pulled out of the ceiling. Most likely, you have already guessed that the fourth cable is nothing more than. In modern electrical practice, it is customary to designate it "PE". It has a yellow-green color and all that is required is to connect it to the chandelier wires of the same color, having previously combined their contact. The function of this wire is to divert dangerous voltage from the chandelier through the ground bus into the soil.

Old-style apartments and chandeliers, unlike modern new buildings and European equipment, do not have grounding. Then there will be no fourth cable and you will not need the above steps. Or, if grounding is nevertheless removed from the ceiling, but not provided for in the chandelier, then this cable must be carefully insulated.

Attention! The fourth cable may also be a phase! The presence of the third phase conductor on the ceiling gives you a unique opportunity to form as many as three groups of chandelier lamps, but then you will need the appropriate switch - with three keys. If you do not need the third phase, feel free to isolate it.

Let's move on to the most important thing. Now you need to put together, providing reliable contact, phase cables and neutral cables of each group of light bulbs on a chandelier. For example, in a five-horned chandelier it will turn out like this:

  • the first group of lamps (two lamps) - we connect two phases into one and two neutrals into one;
  • the second group (three lamps) - we connect three phases into one and three neutrals into one;
  • we connect the neutral cables of both groups to a common zero;
  • result: two phases and a common zero come out of the chandelier, in total - three prepared contacts.

Observing the marking and purpose, these three wires are connected to the wires on the ceiling that correspond in color and purpose: the first phase to the first phase, the second phase to the second phase, zero is connected to zero.

Don't use twists! Twisting is a very common method, but far from safe. Places of twists, with incomplete contact, often overheat, their insulation from this cracks and loses its protective function. Use express connection terminals, it is fast and reliable.

If the wires of the chandelier are the same color

The manufacturer of the chandelier could not leave any markings on the cables and it would be possible to unambiguously determine their belonging only by using a multimeter. How to proceed:

  1. you need to unscrew the lamp from the chandelier and visually determine the phase (spring in the center) and zero (located on the side) contacts.
  2. looking for a neutral wire. To do this, touch the probe of the multimeter to the side contact in the cartridge, and the second in turn touch the stripped cables at the exit of the chandelier. If at the moment of touching a sound signal appears, then you have found the neutral wire. Tag him.
  3. the same actions are performed when searching for phase cables, only the probe touches the middle contact in the cartridge. The device will emit a signal when a phase is found. The wire should be marked as a phase.
  4. if there are a lot of cables on the chandelier, then you can understand which phase and which zero belong to which of the bulbs, you can only probe each circuit with a multimeter. The found phase wires are alternately closed with the central contacts of the bulbs. The sound of the device will indicate the correspondence of the wire to any of the lamps. You also need to do the search for zero. The result will be the number of contours found, which corresponds to the number of horns in the chandelier. You have to independently form them into two groups.
  5. , if it is present, they are also identified with a multimeter by an audible signal, touching the probes of the device with the metal case of the chandelier and the desired wire.

Two-gang switch

A two-key switch is suitable for a common phase and two neutrals, one for each key. The common phase conductor diverges into both keys and, when they are turned on synchronously, feeds both lighting circuits, and switching on in turn will feed only one of the circuits.

In household networks, various devices are used to illuminate premises: spotlights, chandeliers, LED strips. Most lighting fixtures are connected to the electrical network with two wires, but there are also those whose connection causes some difficulties for ordinary people and novice electricians.

The most striking example is a ceiling lamp with five plafonds, called a five-arm, in which instead of two wires, ten are brought out at once. To simplify the installation process, the following will be a connection diagram for a five-arm chandelier in two variations.

Preparatory work

The number of plafonds in the chandelier determines not only the glow points, but also the number of leads from them; two leads are connected to each bulb in the carob chandeliers. It's good if they are already connected to the cartridge, otherwise the leads are simply brought into the appropriate guides, but not connected to anything.

In this case, it is necessary to ring each connection for the presence of a circuit using a multimeter. If the measuring device shows a connection, then you can proceed to the next step, otherwise you need to remove the cover and connect the wires to the contacts of the cartridge.

The conclusions in the chandelier are connected to one point from each horn. The blue wires are connected to the common node of the electrical circuit - this will be the zero output. Brown or red conductors are connected into a knot for connection to a phase conductor. Color coding of wires can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer. The number of phase nodes will depend on the electrical circuit by which the lighting device is connected.

The connection is best made using screw terminals. In extreme cases, you can carefully twist the wires with pliers and insulate with special caps.

The use of PVC tape is undesirable, as it dries out over time, and the quality of the insulation decreases. In some luminaire designs, the preliminary combination of lamps is not performed, and pairs of wires from each lamp come out of the vertical tube separately.

If the lamp does not consist of one lamp, but of several (for example, three), the connection in this case is also not particularly difficult: all the neutral wires in the chandelier are connected to each other and connected to the neutral wire of the network.

All phase wires are also interconnected and connected to the phase wire that came from the switch.

When connecting, you need to twist wires of the same color together. The resulting twists are connected to the wires going through the ceiling to the single-gang switch, as described above.

Connecting a chandelier through a two-gang switch

Modern electrical wiring in the apartment is carried out with a three-core cable with wires of different colors. Three wires from a two-gang switch are also suitable for the place of the proposed fixture of the lamp. How to connect a chandelier in this case?

Here there are difficulties with determining the purpose of the wires. One of the three is the neutral conductor, common to all lamps. The other two are phase, passing through various switch keys.

Unfortunately, electricians do not adhere to a single color scheme for connecting wires, and the colors of wires in cables from different companies may also be different. Before connecting the lamp, you need to determine the purpose of the wires. The easiest way to do this is with a voltage indicator while pressing the switch keys. The conductor on which the indicator does not detect the phase and will be zero.

In the absence of such an indicator, you will have to de-energize the entire apartment and disassemble the switch. After removing the cover from the switch, you can see what color wires go from the keys to the chandelier. The neutral conductor does not pass through the keys, and the phase incoming wire is divided by the keys into two groups.

The structure of the two-gang switch

We turn to the second important component of our circuit - a two-gang switch. In this chapter, we will analyze how it works, which will allow it to be connected to a chandelier without error. They are usually installed in fairly large rooms where the lighting must be controlled separately, for example, during the evening vigil at the TV, the user needs 3 lamps, and for some work he lights 6. Not only chandeliers are connected to them, but also separately installed lamps and even their groups - it all depends on the intended lighting scheme.


Let's compare two-gang and one-gang switches to understand their fundamental difference. The photo below shows the second option. We see that two wires are connected to it. Do not think that this is a plus and a minus. In fact, this is one wire, just a switch can “break” and “connect” it. These wires are connected to terminals that are not interconnected. A pendulum switch made of dielectric (plastic) is installed in the middle, which, when pressed, pushes a movable spring contact connecting the contact pads in this position. As a result, the circuit is closed, and the current begins to run.


When this device is connected, the phase wire from the chandelier is connected to one contact, and from the second, the wire pulls to a common phase in the junction box.


A two-button switch works on a similar principle. A phase wire is inserted into it from the junction box. It must be connected to a fixed contact, which will be common to two keys. For each key, you need to connect another wire, which will go to the chandelier and connect there with those separate twists that we wrote about earlier. That is, we have three wires and they are all phase, just one is the input, and the rest are the outputs.

The moving contacts of the device are not connected to each other in any way. This will only happen if both keys are set to the on position. When pressed, they will connect the circuit separately along the circuits, which allows you to independently control the lamps.


What happens if you do not know which wire is the common phase, and connect it to one of the moving contacts? If we do this, then a wire from one of the twists in the chandelier will come to the fixed contact, which means that if you press this key, the lamps in it will light up. If you simultaneously press the second key, all the lamps will light up, but if the first key is then turned off, everything will go out, since the common phase is cut off from the fixed contact, which should be common.

To prevent this from happening, you need to know exactly which wire goes where - this is what color marking is for. But what if the electrician confused the wires when connecting in the junction box? You need to call them, how to do this, we will tell you a little later.

Correct connection of a chandelier and a switch

All this sounded beautiful in words, but in fact, for sure, many readers still have questions, in particular, how to make such a connection in practice. Let's look at two methods, one when we see only the leads, and the second when we do the wiring ourselves. Let's start with the second one, as it is more difficult to implement.

Let's say you're building your own house and it comes down to wiring. How to do it right?


First, we prepare the necessary tool. You will need:

  • wire cutters, for shortening wires;
  • a clerical knife or special tongs for cleaning wires from insulation;
  • terminals of any convenient type;
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver-indicator;
  • tester;
  • perforator;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • insulating tape;
  • wall chaser for organizing hidden wiring and some other devices that we will mention along the way if necessary.

With hidden wiring, you need to hide the base of the switches. They are installed in round plastic boxes that must be built into the wall. The installation of the element differs depending on the material of the walls. If they are made of concrete or other hard materials, use a hammer drill with a diamond core drill. We need to drill a hole with a diameter of 73 mm. If you have a frame wall in front of you, then the installation of the boxes is carried out simultaneously with their assembly - the cable is passed from the back side and led out into the cut hole (a wood crown is used here). Then a box is placed, which is held by screw puffs. In a concrete wall, the boxes are held by gypsum mortar.
Next, you need to drill the channels that will lead to the junction box. For these purposes, it is best to use a wall chaser - with it the strobe will be of the same depth and even - it will be much easier to cover it up later. The groove is first vertically until it reaches the level of the junction box, and then horizontally, right up to it.

Advice! If you have a suspended ceiling, then instead of a horizontal strobe, you can run the wires directly across the ceiling.

Alternatively, you can use a grinder or puncher. The last option is the worst, as there is a risk of chipping the plaster. If you have a frame-type wall, then, again, we make a broach during its assembly.

Then the wiring is laid. We need a three-core wire with a cross section sufficient for the loads from the chandelier. The wires in the strobe need to be fixed somehow. To do this, use special dowels with clamps, home-made clamps from pieces of wires or a gypsum solution that hardens very quickly.

The ends of the wires are displayed in boxes, where we will connect them.

We clean the wires first from the general insulation, and then from the inner one, exposing the ends by 1-1.5 cm. The length of the leads should be enough to reach the desired terminals in the switch. You can’t leave a lot either, otherwise you won’t be able to install the device.

The contacts on the switch will be labeled L, L1 and L2. The first is the common phase, we connect any of the three wires here and remember it (as an option, you can attach a tag to the other end). We connect the remaining wires with moving contacts - also mark everything so that it is easier to navigate later.

After connection, the switch is attached to its box. It is held in it by expanding tendrils, which, when the screw is tightened, wedged between the walls of the box, or on self-tapping screws. At the end, a front decorative panel is placed, and we do not return here anymore.

Let's move on to the distribution box. In it, we need to find a common zero and phase. This can be done with the help of dialing, which we will discuss below. We remove the insulation from them, if used to connect the twist, having previously de-energized everything in the shield. The wire that we previously connected to the fixed terminal (let it be blue) is connected to the common phase.
We take the same three-core wire and stretch it to the point where the chandelier will be installed. The easiest way to do surface mounting, as shown in the photo. The conductors are placed in a plastic corrugation and attached to the base with special clips. There is also internal wiring, when the wires are laid in the voids of the floor slabs - such a scheme is extremely inconvenient if it is necessary to replace the wiring.

When installing a wire inside a frame, for example, drywall, it is very important not to connect it with it, since in the event of a short circuit, the corrugation walls may not withstand and the entire structure will be energized, which is fraught with accidents and electric shock. Laying is always carried out on non-combustible and non-conductive surfaces. If the ceiling is made of wood, the corrugation is made of stainless steel.

Three wires from the chandelier will be connected to the laid cable. We throw zero twist on the blue wire. Phase - for the rest. Connections are best made through terminal blocks. If they are not there, you can twist it, just insulate everything well.

Attention! If the chandelier provides for grounding, then you must throw a four-wire wire to it in order to connect the desired output to the common ground.

We return to the junction box. Here we will have 4 free wires - 2 from the chandelier, 2 from the switch. They will be color coded in pairs. All of them are phase. We connect them by color and neatly stack them.

This completes the connection, close the junction box, screw in the light bulbs, apply voltage through the shield and make a test run. If you did everything right, then everything will work fine.
